Space to Screen Proposal
My work explores the relationship between Irish Catholicism and Horror Cinema. Two very different subjects from the surface, but both use scare tactics to entice their audience. Taking a different approach from both has helped me in my studio practice, to understand the similarities and differences between them.
My video deals with the idea of “Take and eat, this is my body” which was spoken in the bible. Feeling like the idea of structured religion tears at our bodies, dissecting them and while still owning every right that Irish Woman have to fight for. Our bodies most importantly.
The addition of the angelus was important to me, as it is still a prominent feature in a free speech Ireland, being shown on the regular on Irish television. Ironically it promotes peace, even though in Ireland a lot of blood has been split in the name of religion.

The Limerick Athenaeum and the Theatre Royal
Located at 30 Upper Cecil Street, The Atheneum was built in 1833 and has been used for various purposes, such as Headquarters for St. Michael’s Parish Commissioners, until 1855, School of Art (Limerick Athenaeum – Municipal School of Science & Art), a lecture hall, a theatre, a concert hall, a cinema and Limerick’s first public library. The latest addition was the live concert hall, The Theatre Royal. In 1912, the ‘Atheneum Picturedrome’ was introduced in 1912, but films had been shown there since 1900. Iconic films such as Cleopatra in 1934 and the Wizard of Oz in 1939. Sadly, the very last film to be shown on the screen was ‘Police Academy 2’, in 1997. I feel like this is a great place to display my video, albeit outside the venue, due to it’s impact on Limerick’s cinema history. I look closely at Horror cinema, and the old art deco style of the screens, was reminiscent to the architecture and style of classic horror films, such as ‘The Shining’ in an abstract way.
Location of set up
My Video will be set up, just inside the fence with structure that I will build. This will be out of reach of the public. The video will be shown on an iPad screen, that will be placed inside a wooden box structure. The front of the box will be cut out, and a sheet of protective perspex will be placed to protect the iPad in case of rain. The back of the box will have a door that can open and close to place the iPad inside. This allows for the connecting of power banks throughout the day as needs be. The box will be secured to a tripod that can be lowered and raised for mobility.
Bluetooth speakers will be connected to the iPad and placed around the legs of the tripod, to allow for a more surround effect for the angelus bells.
The top of the box structure will be decorated with an Art Deco style finish. Taking inspiration from classic art deco cinema, and the interior and colour of the inside of the Theatre Royal itself. The classic colours used will be red and gold
