It's in my veins
So here is a piece I call 'It's In My Veins'. Please watch it with headphones!
It's In My Veins from sculpture and combine media on Vimeo.
My work explores the relationship between Irish Catholicism and Horror Cinema. Two very different subjects from the surface, but both use scare tactics to entice their audience. Taking different approach from both has helped me in my studio practice, to understand the similarities and differences between them.
My video deals with the idea of “Take and eat, this is my body” which was spoken in the bible. Feeling like the idea of structured religion tears at our bodies, dissecting them and while still owning every right that Irish Woman have to fight for. Our bodies most importantly.
The addition of the angelus was important to me, as it is still a prominent feature in a free speech Ireland, being shown on the regular on Irish television. Ironically it promotes peace, even though in Ireland a lot of blood has been split in the name of religion.
Stemming from watching Clive Barker’s Hellraiser (1987), I thought to use a more gory and explicit perspective. Using a mix of fruits and meats both symbolise the fruits of our womb in various ways, in a literal and abstract approach.
