1 Minute Rush
This is my one minute rush for my current semester in Sculpture and Combined Media.
I looked (very obviously) at horror and religion, or more specifically the Catholic Church. Below I have attached my current statement. You'll have to excuse me, it's just terrible.
"My work explores
the relationship between Irish Catholicism and Horror Cinema. Two very
different subjects from the surface, but both use scare tactics to entice their
audience. Taking different approach from both has helped me in my studio practice,
to understand the similarities and differences between them.
Looking at
different controversies that the Catholic church has faced, worked as a
borderline subject for my work. Ireland as a nation has been quick to excuse
the sexual and physical abuse that has occurred over the last number of
decades, as well as the complete control and power that is held over Ireland. I
wanted to make the viewer feel uncomfortable, because talking about abuse and
exploitation is unpleasant and distressing, which is a feeling horror cinema
achieves proficiently.
Looking at Jill McDermid’s Woman on a Cross (2014) from a fine art aspect, and horrors such as
the Saw franchise and Clive Barker’s Hellraiser (1987), have helped shape my video work. Researching different techniques that
transgressive videos artists such as Kembra Pfahler, helped me achieve the
grainy, distorted look to my film."
